Jean Langlais Playing His Own Works
Kathleen Thomerson
Crown Center Sheraton Hotel - BENTON
Commentary on selected European recordings made by Jean Langlais playing his own published compositions. Excerpts will include pieces played on the Müller organ, St. Bavokerk, Haarlem (1971 recording, Intersound Stereo 2001); on the Rieger organ, St. Augustin, Vienna (1982 live concert, Edition Lade EL CD 002, 1993); on the Cavaillé- Coll organ, the Cathedral of Notre-Dame de Paris (1955 Erato STU 70358), and on the Cavaillé-Coll organ at the Basilica of Sainte-Clotilde, Paris, where he was titular organist from 1945 to 1988 (1954 Ducretet-Thomson 270 C 003 and 1976 Arion ARN 36 331). Several places in Langlais’ printed scores will be shown to illustrate how differences between French and American music printing can sometimes lead Americans to make errors in manual and registration changes. Recordings will include both early and late compositions (Suite médiévale, Suite brève, Organ Book, Folkloric Suite, Missa “In Simplicitate”, Huit chants de Bretagne).
